Autumn Adventures: D.C. in Full Color

Your Guide to the Best Fall Experiences in the Capital

As autumn’s brilliant colors sweep through Washington, D.C., there’s no better time to discover the capital’s seasonal splendor. From picturesque hikes under golden leaves to cultural events that unite the community, the city boasts endless opportunities to enjoy fall’s charm. Whether you’re exploring annual festivals or seeking more tranquil moments, D.C. offers something special around every corner—and when you need a break, a quiet retreat in Dupont Circle is never far.

Discover Fall Foliage

Autumn in D.C. is nothing short of magical, with the National Mall presenting stunning views of iconic monuments framed by fiery reds, oranges, and yellows—perfect for capturing memorable photos. For a more immersive day in nature, head to Rock Creek Park’s 32 miles of trails, where you can delight in peaceful walks or more adventurous hikes through glowing woods. Georgetown’s Dumbarton Oaks and the Tregaron Conservancy also provide charming garden walkways and hidden paths framed by crimson hues. For a quieter escape, the hiking spots at Kingman and Heritage Islands along the Anacostia River feature some of the season’s best scenic views.

Celebrate With Family-Friendly Fun

Capture the spirit of the season with activities for all ages. From October 25-26, Mount Vernon hosts a Halloween event at George Washinton’s estate, complete with trick-or-treating, a costume parade, and 18th-century entertainment, including a Punch & Judy puppet show and revolutionary music. Día de los Muertos festivities follow, with the Smithsonian American Art Museum organizing its Día de los Muertos Family Day on October 26, featuring folk dance, face painting, and crafts. The National Museum of the American Indian also hosts a day-long celebration on October 26, with performances, artist demos, and hands-on activities like mask-making.

Savor Festive Flavors

No Fall outing is complete without treating yourself to the season’s best flavors. Anxo Cidery & Tasting Room and Lost Boy Cider are hotspots for sampling crisp, locally made hard cider. Pair your visit with a stop at cozy coffee shops like Compass Coffee or Doubles Café & Bar, where fall favorites like pumpkin lattes and spiced mochas are sure to warm you up. For something sweet, head to Georgetown’s Baked & Wired for their beloved pumpkin whoopie pies, or grab apple cider donuts from local favorites like District Doughnut to round out your autumn indulgence.

Get Moving for Turkey Day

As Thanksgiving approaches, D.C. gears up for its iconic Turkey Pardoning Ceremony at the White House, a tradition that dates back decades. Visitors can also take part in one of the many runs across the city, such as the DC Turkey Trot 5K & Half on November 23 or America’s Trot for Hunger, held on Thanksgiving morning—perfect for some morning movement while soaking in the last of the fall air.

Elevate Your Autumn at The St. Gregory

Here at The St. Gregory Hotel, we invite you to enjoy our own autumn-inspired experiences. Join us on October 25 for live entertainment at Ellington Park Bistro, where the Cybele Quartet will perform an elegant mix of piano and guitar while you sample contemporary French dishes. On October 30, our Wine Not? Wednesday's event will honor Día de Los Muertos, with expertly curated wine flights paired with dishes inspired by the holiday.

Whether you’re hiking under a colorful canopy, tasting seasonal treats, or engaging in cultural traditions, Washington, D.C. is an ideal destination for experiencing the beauty and energy of autumn. After a day of adventure, a refined haven in the heart of Dupont Circle awaits, where you can unwind and plan your next discovery.
